VETERANS DAY - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11th The Virginia State Chapter will distribute 150 prepaid telephone cards to Veterans at the McGuire Medical Center on this holiday. VSC Members and guests are asked to meet in the hospital lobby at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11th. Volunteer Grace Sharpe will be our guide and take us to the bedside of the veterans most worthy of receiving these telephone cards. John Berger has purchased the cards. We need your support as we hand them out. Only a skeleton force is on hand on a holiday; so your visit will mean a great deal to these men and women. After the tour the Chapter plans to have lunch at Steak & Ale on Midlothian Turnpike. Those planning to attend must notify John Berger (804) 730-4042 by Sunday, November 8, 1998. He then may finalize plans for the days. The Chapter agreed to some of the award money from the Newsletter and John and Christy Black made a most generous donation to permit the VSC to purchase an additional 50 telephone cards. Many thanks to the Blacks! Remembering the veterans in this way is the least we can do. |

NEWS OF OUR MEMBERSHIP We had discussed visiting the Governor's Mansion on Saturday, December 12th. Once we have gone thru, we would go to a restaurant (to be announced) for dinner, if that is something you would like to do. The Governor's Mansion is open on Saturday from 2:00-5:00 p.m. (This is the last Christmas before the renovation.) Another opportunity would be on December 2, 1998 at 5:00. (This is the traditional tree lighting ceremony at the Capital Steps. Following the ceremony everyone is invited to walk over to the Mansion to walk around inside. Refreshments will be in the garden as you exit. Again, if you desire, we could go out to eat. These ideas will be discussed at the meeting. If you have other thoughts, we can discuss them at that time. |

Faces of D-Day, June 6, 1944 Recently, Dick Andrews received a letter from someone who found this website. JoAnna McDonald is editing a book for which she is collecting wartime photographs of American D-Day veterans. If you would like to know more about the project, you can read the full text of the letter. |
